Change In AJ ZIP Codes
85218 and 85219 to change— begins July 1
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The News
Some areas of Apache Junction will adopt a new ZIP Code beginning Wednesday, July 1, according to postal officials.
“As the state’s population continues to increase, many Central Arizonans will be asked to make a simple one-digit change to their addresses’ ZIP Codes starting on Wednesday, July 1, 2009,” said Peter Hass, U.S. Postal Service spokesman.
The change is easy: If the current ZIP Code is 85219, the “2” in the ZIP Code will be replaced with a “1.” Everything else stays the same. This applies to 85219 and 85218.
The new “851” ZIP Code totaling just under 5,000 square miles, from Apache Junction at the north, to Red Rock in the south, Maricopa to the west and Winkelman to the east.
“The change is needed to provide expanded capacity as population growth is anticipated to continue in this part of the state, and the Postal Service was on the verge of using up all possible fivedigit ‘852’ ZIP Code combinations,” Hass said.
“Each ZIP Code has a limited capacity of deliveries; making this change now will help USPS employees provide efficient, effective delivery of the mail for many years into the future.”
A total of 30 existing fivedigit “852” ZIP Codes in Pinal County will become “851” ZIPs on July 1. Every postal customer in the affected area will receive a written notification of their address’ specific new ZIP Code by May 30. Customers are asked to notify regular correspondents about their new ZIP Code as soon as possible.
In order to assist businesses and others make the transition, including depleting current supplies of stationery, there is a one-year grace period during which both ZIP Codes will be valid for mail delivery to these addresses. Even so, the Postal Service strongly encourages customers to begin using their new ZIP Code starting Wednesday, July 1.

News From Other Places

News from Wisconsin

Spoke to Arva Kvam yesterday and she asked me to put something in the newsletter about Joe so here it is.

Joe and Arva left Arizona late May and are now in Wisconsin. For those of you who missed the newsletter about Joe he is suffering from kidney failure and is receiving dialysis 3 times a week. The goings are tough and he is very tired but with a few notes from friends I'm sure he will perk up. Joe turned 80 on May 14 but I don't ever remember him slowing down at the park with all the cooking he use to do and all the popcorn he popped on Tuesday night bingo. His address is now: S2428 Highway 95, Arcadia, Wisconsin 54612

Thanks Chuck for keeping the newsletter going. I means a lot to all of us that read it.

The $40,000 Funeral

Larry died. His will provided $40,000 for an elaborate funeral. As the last guests departed the affair, his wife Sarah turned to her oldest and dearest friend. "Well, I'm sure Larry would be pleased," she said.

"I'm sure you're right," replied Jody, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. "How much did this really cost?"

"All of it," said Sarah. "Forty-thousand.."

"No!" Jody exclaimed. "I mean, it was very nice, but $40,000?"

Sarah answered, "The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to church. The whiskey, wine and snacks were another $500. The rest went for the Memorial Stone."

Jody computed quickly. "$32,500 for a Memorial Stone? My God, how big is it?"

"Four and a half carats."

Recipe of the Week
by Jery Rickard

 Orange Dream Parfaits

4 oz. cream cheese, softened
4-1/2 tsp. sugar
¾ tsp. vanilla extract
¾ C. miniature marshmallows
1-1/2 C. heavy whipping cream, whipped, divided
3 C. orange sherbet, softened
6 clear plastic cups (8 oz. each)

In a small bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until smooth; fold in marshmallows and half of the whipped cream. Set aside. In another bowl, fold remaining whipped cream into sherbet.
Spoon ¼ cupfuls of sherbet mixture into each plastic cup; top with 3 tablespoonfuls cream cheese mixture. Repeat layers. Cover and freeze for 3 hours or until firm. Remove from the freezer 15 minutes before serving.
YIELD: 6 servings.

Nutrition Facts: 1 parfait (prepared with reduced-fat cream cheese) equals 289 calories, 17 g fat (10 saturated fat), 54 cholesterol, 128 mg sodium, 32 g carbohydrate, 2 g fiber, 4 g protein.

TIP: If your parfaits have frozen solid in the freezer, let them sit out for 15-20 minutes at room temperature to thaw a bit before serving.

Instead of orange sherbet, use raspberry, lemon or chocolate sorbet.
Add strawberry flavored cream cheese instead of plain.
Opt for colorful, flavored marshmallows.
Sprinkle fresh fruit on top before serving or make a fruit puree and drizzle on top. Or crumble vanilla-or chocolate-flavored cookies over the parfaits for a little crunch.

News from Prescott Valley

Talk about dry, Wednesday the low humidity for the day in Phoenix was 3% and the low dew point was 9°F. While relative humidity is a relative measure of how humid it is, the dew point temperature is an absolute measure of how much water vapor is in the air (how humid it is). That is why we do not get moisture rings around our cocktail glasses.

Well, they did it again Tuesday evening. The D-backs were playing the Los Angeles Dodgers and were ahead 5 to 1 going in to the bottom of the eight inning. The Dodgers had two outs and then got five runs to win the game 6 to 5. So much for our bullpen.

The Diamondbacks have now won 23 games and lost 31 games for a .426 average. They are now thirteen and one half games out of first place in the National League West.   Yes, we still watch.
