News From Rock Shadows

We here were once again saddened by the news that Dick Herron passed away on August 3rd. He and Terry wintered in Rock Shadows for 20 years. Dick volunteered in the Park post office for many years. Frank and I were fortunate to be one of their neighbors on 7th Street. Obituary
Park residents enjoyed our monthly birthday celebration on Tuesday, the 10th, in the Gold Room with cake, ice cream and card games. Our hosts were Vi Matlick, Ione Nelson and Helen Allen.
No monsoon activity for us in AJ this week. Hopefully we will have more rain in the weeks to come.
The cherry picker is set up in the park - our palm trees should be trimmed in the next week.
For those who have not heard - there is no longer a Tempe Town Lake. The bladder in the dam broke in July and 1 B gallons of water went down the Salt River. Preparations are underway to have the dam repaired and filled by November.
Ione Nelson submitted the following notice: "I am out of the hospital again, after a blood clot in my right leg. I so wanted to thank those who sent good well wishes, visits, phone calls, flowers and food while I am finally recovering. A special thanks to Nicole for taking me to the hospital and my follow up appointments. It is great to have my son Gary with me, as my care giver. Thanks for the prayers that brought me through my ordeal."
Frank and I are already receiving messages from residents with their plans to return to Rock Shadows this fall. We like those kind of messages.

News From Other Places

News from Nebraska

I had additional surgery on my left arm Thursday to repair the fistula. Prior to dialysis, I had no idea what a fistula was. I have learned it is a procedure to allow needles connected to hoses to be entered into a blood vessel on the arm or a leg to allow blood to be removed and returned to the body. This is the process that takes four hours to complete. Prior to using a fistula a catheter is inserted in the right chest to remove and return the blood. I am having no problems with the dialysis. The worst part is sitting for more than four hours every Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, getting connected to the equipment, having the dialysis and then the disconnecting of the equipment. The car gets mighty hot by the time I finish every afternoon. I am afraid to leave any windows open because I never know when it might rain.
We have had a heat wave in Omaha the last few days. The temperatures have been in the high 90's and with high humidity, a heat index near 110 every day. The hot weather and dialysis treatments have prevented me from playing golf this summer. I hope to make it up in Arizona this winter. The dialysis is not preventing Ruth and I from returning to Rock Shadows this fall. We plan on arriving there on October 23rd. I will resume dialysis on the 25th in the Mountain Vista doctor's building on the east side of Mountain Vista hospital on Southern and Crismon streets.
Chuck I hope you receive news from a lot of members this week and hopefully from some who haven't written for a long time. I appreciate the work you do putting out the newsletter every week

News from Montana

First of all, I really like the wallpaper design for the Website, Chuck.
I also continue to pray for Don Jobin, Harvey Holbrooke & Fred Kudym and any other Rock Shadow friends that might be ailing or on the mend.
Not really anything new in our household. Since Elsie got out of the hospital, they gave her 8 new medications to take along with what she is taking already. Last week she had 3 doctor's visit's & so far only 1 for Monday. Since her hospital stay, she has been on a low sodium diet (200 mgs.) , has to take a pill for sugar diabetes, not sure for how long that will be. Her eye-sight is better but still not where it should be. She has driven some by herself but I've been taking her to her doctor's visit's when I can. Before & even when she was in the hospital, her heart rate was really high. That is better now but she gets so tired, even in the morning, she has to lie down. She has to document everything- blood pressure morning & night, blood sugar count, everything she eats. She will get there- it is kind of frustrating for her because the doctor's haven't been able to figure anything out because everything seems to fluctuate so much. We are still bound & determined to make it to Rock Shadows this year. We are sure hoping for the best!
We would like to go to Spokane to our daughter, grand-daughter, our 5 yr. old great-grandson & our new 1 yr. old great-granddaughter. Hopefully we can anyway.
We talk to Lola Arvidson quite often. She has been really good about calling to see how Elsie is doing. They have been busy cutting down a lot of trees in their yard that were affected by the pine beetle infestation. Linda & Jim were over to help them as well.
It has sure been nice to see so many people sending articles in to the newsletter. I was also pleased to see some article's from our friend's in Rock Shadow's!
Our weather has been kind of warm, for us anyway- 91°, 93° but nothing higher. We haven't had any real bad hail storms here in Gt. Falls but they have else where and damaged a lot of wheat. They had several tornado's in the NE part of the state- their house's were ruined & several people have died also.
I think I have said enough for now. Hope everybody is staying well! Thanks again Chuck & Jery for your nice recipe's. I guess it doesn't look like the Diamondback's will do any better this. We can hope for next year. Even though the Dodger's have been my favorite team I still root for the Diamondback's. I think the League needs to take the Dodgers away from the current owner's.

News from Indiana

Hope all is well with Jery and you and that you are having a great summer and keeping cool. Southern Indiana has been rainy and HOT. Last summer we had only one day that reached 90°. This year so far we've had 20 some days over 90 and the forecast the calls for the next 6 days to be in the 90s.

Jeri and Keith Flockhart from Rock Shadows and Iowa are here visiting a few days and we are enjoying our time with them. The Keiths' (Flockhart and Hayden) have played some golf and we have visited with Mary and Larry Abell, too. Jeri has asked me to email you the following note of thanks to include in the next Rock Shadows newsletter:

'Keith and Jeri Flockhart would like to thank the many Rock Shadows friends who sent cards of sympathy on the death of their granddaughter, Jennifer.'

Thanks, Chuck; we appreciate your time and work in keeping the summer newsletter going and giving us the opportunity of knowing what our Rock Shadows friends are doing over the summer.

News from Alberta

I do not know where the summer has disappeared to this year. We have been blessed because our family came to visit us from Texas for two weeks. We took them to the Rocky Mountains for a week and had a fabulous time. There are ever ever so many activities one can be busy doing there!! Our grand daughter then spent an extra two weeks with us before she had to return to Texas. Wow! A fourteen year old kept us very busy but we loved every minute of it.
One of the highlights of the year was the successful 100th anniversary celebrations we organized for our little town of Castor. We more then tripled our population for the long weekend of August! It was an awesome time and as all has told us, so much fun and reminiscing! Our parade lasted forty minutes passing one point…hard to believe but participation was at the fullest from far and wide. We had people represented from the USA, Australia, England, Scotland, Singapore and almost every province in Canada. Our little town was thrilled!
Bryce's garden is not doing as well as it should because of all the wind and rain and storms that we have endured ....but we will still have some garden veggies!
We hope and pray for all and unbelievably soon we will all be heading to AZ, God willing.

Amazon

The Amazon rain forest produces more than 20% of the world's oxygen supply.

The Amazon River pushes so much water into the Atlantic Ocean that, more than one hundred miles at sea off the mouth of the river, one can dip fresh water out of the ocean. The volume of water in the Amazon river is greater than the next eight largest rivers in the world combined and three times the flow of all rivers in the United States.

News from Prescott Valley

There has been a break in the  Monsoon with no rain this week. A 20% chance of rain is forecasted for Monday and Tuesday.

When we left for Texas, Sunday the 1st, we encountered rain all the way into New Mexico. Sometimes it was so heavy that it was difficult to see. The rest of the week in Texas it was hot and dry. We had an enjoyable time visiting our daughter and son in-law. Other than the rain the first day the trip both ways was uneventful.

Friday the 13th is Jery's Birthday. I call Bingo tonight, Thursday, so when I pick up the ball and call O 70 I will remind everyone that tomorrow Jery will be 70. She is taking some jumbo size cup cakes to share with her friends that sit close by.

The Diamondbacks are still solidly in last place in the National League, Western Division. Now 21 1/2 games behind first place San Diego. So far they have won 46 games and lost 69 for a .400 average. The average has come up over the last two weeks as they are winning a few more games.

The Diamondbacks tied a major league record by hitting four consecutive home runs, with Adam LaRoche, Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew connecting in the fourth inning Wednesday night to beat Milwaukee 8-2.

The Diamondbacks became just the seventh team in history to accomplish the feat.
