News From Other Places

News New Hampshire

Hello Everyone,

Thank you so much for keeping up with the newsletter for us Chuck. Even if it's bad news, this is the only way we can all know about it and acknowledge our concerns with those who are involved.

Don has started his therapy twice a week at the rehab near the beach where we live. He also has "home work" to do twice a day which he does faithfully. He is walking without a limp and has gone without the cane most of the time now. He plans to continue his program when we get back to Arizona in Sept. It has been so hot and humid this summer that it is hard to walk outdoors without sweating and feeling sick so we do it at night when it cools down.

We had a "great white shark" at the mouth of the river where it flows into the ocean on Friday so we had to keep people out of the water until the coast guard and air traffic told us it was OK to go back in but only knee deep. The shark came near a boat as the fisherman was reeling in his fish so it really scared him. Also on Friday there was a jellyfish the size of a turkey (50 lbs) about 5 miles from our beach that stung 150 people with some of them going to the hospital. We never see jellyfish or sharks in our waters because it's so cold but this year with the oil in the gulf I guess they are coming north for food.

Thanks again everyone for all the news. Looking forward to seeing you in Arizona.

News from Iowa

We have not written before but after all the cards, concerns and prayers since our daughter (Lynn's) tragic death we felt we had to send our heartfelt "THANKS". Our daughter Lynn was in an auto accident with her friend Doug and our youngest daughter (Karen) and her husband Jay on July 11th coming back from a weekend in the Ozarks. They were hit from behind by and impaired driver and thrown into the path of an oncoming van with 5 occupants. All were hospitalized with serious injuries Karen and Jay are home now recuperating from broken ribs, cuts and Karen has a broken breast bone. Doug is still in the hospital in the hospital in MO and will have a third surgery on his right leg this week. Hopefully after that he can be transported to IA to rehab for his recuperation.
On a lighter note we have been getting rain, rain and more rain in IA. Bill keeps busy mowing grass and the farmers are hoping that it doesn't do to much crop damage.
We went to Manitoba about three weeks ago and visited with Cliff and Kay Kristjenson one day. Cliff really looks good and we had a great time with them although the men beat us at cards.
Our plans for coming to AZ this winter are on hold at this time as Mom will be having her 99th birthday in Sept. and if she is still with us I feel I can't leave.
Again we can't say enough about how great our Rock Shadows friends have been and how much you all mean to us.
Many, Many THANKS" from Iowa.
Sincerely,
Bill & Jeneane Stiff

Antarctica

Antarctica is the only land on our planet that is not owned by any country.
Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica.
This ice also represents seventy percent of all the fresh water in the world.
As strange as it sounds, however, Antarctica is essentially a desert;
the average yearly total precipitation is about two inches.
Although covered with ice (all but 0.4% of it, ice.),
Antarctica is the driest place on the planet,
with an absolute humidity lower than the Gobi desert.

News from Prescott Valley

The Monsoon has finally hit the Prescott Valley area. We have received over 2 1/2 inches of rain this past week. Last night we had a beautiful gentle rain that lasted about an hour and produced 3/4 inch of rain. Today the sky is heavy with clouds and radar indicating storms all around us but so far they have missed us.

No newsletter August 6th. Jery and I will be in Texas visiting our daughter. Yeah, I know. Not a good place to go in August but our daughter is a school teacher and she teaches summer school until July 23rd then regular school starts there August 11th.

As I have been saying, Pittsburgh is the only team in the National league with an win/loss average lower than the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks are still solidly in last place in the National League, Western Division. Now 20 1/2 games behind first place San Diego. So far they have won 37 games and lost 64 for a .366 average. As of Wednesday evening Pittsburgh had a .360.
The only other one lower in all of baseball is the American league Baltimore with a .307.
