News from Washington State

First let me say that we like the new format of the web site. Job well done Chuck!
Sorry to hear of the passing of “Woody” and Bill Graham. Appreciate residents and family keeping us up on happenings as these friends have been our “winter family” for years. Good to read the park gatherings and news of our second home each month.
We have been in the process of getting small projects done about the house this summer. Finally hired a known friend to help finish these tasks; like crawl under the house to retrieve items, put in insulation, floor molding trim on my new bathroom floors, etc. We also just had both our flat roofs redone, now we hope to not have to worry about them as long as we live in this home. Mel is unable to do much and I have been working, I told Mel I am getting “too old” to keep being the “handyman” about the house. It was 9 PM last night when I finished mowing the lawn, of course I started late due to hot weather. We have had 97 degrees here and more to come in the next week or so.
Ralph and Crystal Wilcox from space 953 (RS) will be with us for the next week, they have not been to Washington before, so we will spend our days sightseeing. We have room for their 36 foot motor home on our property, so will be able to enjoy their visit twice as much.
We leave on the 19th for a week of camping with our kids. We try each year to get one full week with all and just enjoy “family”. This year we are going to Olympia, (state capital) and will be at a small camp ground with a pool for the kids. Ruth will work one more week in August at the hospital and then hopefully not have any more work until next summer.
We hope to return to Rock Shadows this fall in late October, early November if things work out for us health wise. We look forward to news each week on this web site. Keep us posted all of you out there.
If you are from Washington and are able to attend the Washington Rock Shadows Residents annual potluck, come to the Olympia area on August 7th. The potluck will be held at the home of Jerry and Patty Vetter (RS space 930). She was Patty Strickland prior. If anyone wants more information, they can call me at 509-699-0795 or call Patty and Jerry. I don’t have their address exactly, but if you call information for a phone number, their street address is on Steamboat Island Road, Olympia Washington. Last year we had 20 people there for a fun afternoon.
We wish all a great next few months of summer weather and looking forward to hearing more of your summer activities and news.

Bill Graham's Funeral

Ken and Ute Erickson (7th St) and Armand and I were able to go to Bill's Funeral We were glad we were able to go and pay our last respects to him. I am sure we, and everyone at Rock Shadows, would agree that Bill was one of the finest gentlemen you would ever want to meet. The family all spoke about Bill and Joanne's love of going to Rock Shadows for the many years they were there. We will miss them.

Thanks, Chuck, for getting the newsletter to us every week. I see that you have some new reporters to let us know what is going on at Rock Shadows. Thanks Celine Johnson and Frank and Ruth Crane.

News from Iowa

Hello Everyone,
We are shocked as to how fast the summer is going. I'm sending the last installment on the cornfield pictures taken 7/13/2010. I took one shot from the watering system, one from the road in front of our house. You can see the fence post that an earlier picture had a robin on it. The tassel and picture of the ears were taken at the farm close to where I took the picture with Winston in it. I'm picking lots of vegetables from the garden and freezing the extra that we cannot consume. We hope everyone is doing well.

Many years ago, when I was young, in the 1940s, I would de-tassel corn in hybrid fields. I never remember of doing it the first part of July. I guess farming has changed. Chuck

News from Nebraska

Wednesday we suffered an Arizona type day with temperatures in Omaha in the upper 90°'s with the heat index over 112° due to the high humidity. At six P.M. the tornado sirens started to go off, leading to a trip to the basement. Fortunately, the warning ended a short time later and the only thing that happened, when the storm passed, was a high surface wind and heavy rain.
I appreciate reading the news about Rock Shadows. I was surprised that there are 11 camp workers in the park. I hope that means there is more security at the gate. Chuck, I too also like the new wallpaper. I thank you for the weekly newsletter. I look forward every Friday to read about the club members.

Canada

Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined. Canada is an Indian word meaning 'Big Village'.

News from Prescott Valley

Not much change in our beautiful weather although the temps have risen a little. My computer reports the current local temperature as 95° but the heat index is 91° due to the low 16% humidity. The Monsoon pattern has yet to kick in. There is daily afternoon storms around Arizona but they all seem to miss Prescott.
I don't remember if I have written about this weather site before but here is the one that I like. http://www.wunderground.com. You enter your zip code and you get customized weather reports. A neat feature is the real time radar. Click on the radar image to enlarge. Take your mouse and drag a box around the area of interest. Below the image set to show conditions in each box. Set frames to six and speed to medium. Then click on Update Radar Map and watch the storms move. There are a lot of other adjustments that you can make. Just play with it.

How do you like the new RockComp web site format? Any comments or ideas? I was getting tired of the yellow cactus stuff.

Since the last newsletter the D-Backs played four games against Florida, winning two and loosing two.
This week has been the All Star break so there has been no local action. This also marks the mid way in the MLB season. Hopefully the second half will be better for our Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks are still solidly in last place in the National League, Western Division. Now 17 1/2 games behind first place San Diego. So far they have won 34 games and lost 55 for a .382 average. Only Pittsburg has a lower average in the National League. The Diamondbacks are in 1st place in the National League for errors.

Send me news from your home area. Send all news to Chuck, just click on Chuck or send to chuck@rockcomp.org. When you include pictures send them as an attachment rather than inserting them in the body of the message. It makes life much easier for me.
