News From Other Places

News from Alberta

It is hard to believe but we are having more rain then we actually need right now. It has been downright chilly. Bryce’s garden veggies are barely sticking their noses out of the ground. Where oh where is the sun? One thing we do have when the sun comes out once in a while is mosquitoes. They are hungry beasts right now! Out here in our East country, 25% of the crops still need to be planted.
I was happy to see that more people wrote to the newsletter so I will try to do my part.
We are very excited because our daughter and family are arriving soon from Texas. It will be wonderful to have them home.
We have traveled out to BC with SNOW all the way to Banff and then it just continually rained the whole time we were there. One thing for sure, every tree and blade of grass is GREEN.
We watch CNN and feel ever so badly for the folks along the Gulf Coast. Our hearts and prayers go to them. We have walked along the beaches there so many times and know they are no longer white. So sad.

News from Iowa

We really enjoy reading the newsletter. I am guilty of not writing sooner. I think every week I'll write, the next thing it's Friday and you all know the rest of the story.
We have kept very busy since being home. We have several projects we would like to get done this summer. Our weather hasn't cooperated, most of the projects are outside so things are going slow. We have realized that it might be a good idea to hire the bigger jobs done.
Our April and May got turned around. We've had lots of rain, high winds, hail. Tornados to close for comfort. We are having floods. We sit high so our house is not in danger. I sure feel sorry for the flood victims. Some of the farmers are loosing crops. I think the weather has been crazy everywhere.
They have an "Arizona Jammers Reunion" every year and Eldon and I went this year. It was held in Maple Grove, MN. Had a great turnout. We had musicians from 9 states. Besides the musicians, lots of people that just comes to our jam's to listen came. It was wonderful seeing so many friends that go south. From Rock Shadows, besides Eldon & I, Don & Deloris VanRyswyk #209, Stuart & Carmen Solem #427 and Duane and Glorene Hald #1111 were there. It's a 3 day jam. Don & myself also do jam's around the Des Moines area. Stuart does lots of music around the Grand Rapids, MN area. Keeps us in practice for when we go South. Eldon goes to the Senior Center once a week to play pool, hoping to stay in practice for this winter. Our Senior Center has remodeled and built on with a nice large Pool Room. Several guys go there.
Like everyone else, we have been getting all our doctor, dentist, eye appointments taken care of. So far, so good. We are having to start with new eye and dentist doctors as ours have retired. It's tough getting started with new doctors but I'm sure everything will be fine.
Thank you Jery for all the wonderful recipes. I print them off, haven't gotten all them made but hope to someday. Chuck, you do a great job with the newsletter and we sure appreciate it. I have signed up with Skype (just last week) and the only ones that I have talked with is Wally & Carol Friesen in Canada. I have tried contacting Fred Kudym with no luck. I will try again. He is very busy with his treatments and taking care of Ruth. Skype is pretty neat!!! I think I will enjoy Skype while down South, I can see and talk to friends and family back here in Iowa.

Pictures from Iowa

Hello everyone,
Chuck wanted to see some pictures of the cornfields. These pictures were taken 6-16 and were taken from our house looking toward the farm where Winston grew up. We have had over 11 inches of rain since the 1st and even a little flooding on one bean field. We visited three Rock Shadows couples from Nebraska the first part of the month. The guys golfed and the women had a wonderful visit. I will try to send you progress pictures as the field matures. We hope everyone is doing well.

The corn is as high as an elephant's eye
And it looks like it's climbing clear up to the sky.

News from Prescott Valley

Arizona State University Baseball team was eliminated from the College World Series in Omaha Tuesday.

From the Arizona Republic:
Nebraska city votes to restrict illegal immigration
FREMONT, Neb. - Voters in the eastern Nebraska city of Fremont on Monday approved a ban on hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants, the latest proposal in a series of immigration regulations taken up by communities around the country. Way to go Nebraska.

The humidity is running less than 10%. Night time temps are in the low to mid 50s making for great sleeping. There is no sign of Monsoon activity in the near future.
There are a couple of bad wild fires near Flagstaff. One has so far burned over 14,000 acres. And it was started by a camper not putting out his camp fire. The extremely low humidity makes it difficult to contain these fires and last Sunday and Monday experienced high winds adding to the problem.
A smaller fire, about 300 acres, close to the Little America Resort in Flagstaff has been contained. It also was started by a careless camper. The Authorities caught up with the said camper and he is now in jail. Hooray for the Authorities.
Another fire About 11 miles northeast of Williams burned about 3400 acres.
I call Bingo at the Prescott Adult Center Thursday evening. We are celebrating our third year anniversary of Bingo at the Adult Center.
This Friday, Saturday and Sunday is a Bridge Tournament in Prescott. We play Bridge from 10a.m. till 6p.m. each day. The tournament is held at the Prescott Adult Center and draws people from California, Nevada as well as Arizona. Sometimes we get players from much further away.

The last place Diamondbacks beat the World Champion New York Yankees 10 to 4 in a game Monday evening. I am glad that they won but it had to be some kind of fluke. They lost to the Yankees Tuesday 9 to 3 and Wednesday they lost 6 to 5. They did play a great game Wednesday though.

The Diamondbacks are still solidly in last place in the National League, Western Division. Now 15 games behind first place San Diego. So far they have won 28 games and lost 45 for a .384 average.
